Insulating one of the attics …… yes I am going to talk about it cause it is important living in Iowa to have it….not exciting, not pretty and certainly NOT something you want to do every weekend in November but thats what we did…. sigh… and meh.
Our longest plan we have had for the upstairs bedrooms since we moved in was to expose the beautiful ( well we hope beautiful 🙂 raw cut wood beams and heighten the ceiling. We are not short people and the more height we can add is the best and always the most reasonable option for us. But guess where the current insulatin is… that’s right …….under the attic floor boards and held up by the ceiling tiles in our future bedrooms… sigh… meh…
3 things that had to take place first before we can even pull down the ceiling is
Fix leaky chimneys -DONE
Insulate under the roof- DONE
Vacuum out old blown insulation under floorboards-NEXT WEEKEND *fingers crossed*
Then FINALLY pull down that Ceiling!
So I am going to keep this pretty simple post. BUT, I will talk about what we found:) old houses and their findings is my favorite!
Square headed and man -made hooks- All tied to the wood rafters with old rope strings- as to hang clothes and some hooks not sure if for meat?
Hand written numbers on floorboards and areas marked South/East and North /West locations on wood planks braced up against 2 almost 40 ft each raw cut tree trunk.
Also my head hit every stinking rusty nail in that attic ceiling on the first day! Second day a hardhat was purchased….. cause low angled ceilings, tall people AND insualtion…. sigh…. meh….

Very nice good job. It’s so cool to see our hand hewn beams. Many people don’t know that our houses are built just like the barns only with different skins.

Love what you are doing–good luck. The more we do, the more we see what else needs doing.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the meat market once hung hams in your attic to cure when they ran out of space in MM. We know for sure that they did that in our attic.
